The Last Confederate State House The Dawkin's house or The Shrubs was the Provisional state Capitol of SC at the end of the war between the states. It graces the University of South Carolina campus in Union It is a true historic Federal style treasure. Description It was February of 1865 - an army led by Gen. William T. Sherman was closing in on Columbia and soon would set fire to South Carolina's capitol city. Governor Andrew Gordon McGrath, making the decision to flee, contacted an old college friend, legislator and judge Thomas N. Dawkins, and they discussed moving the capitol to Union, South Carolina. Sometime around Feb. 15, two days before Columbia went up in flames, the center of government with its records, office holders and supporting workers, started its move to Union, Governor Magrath used the library of the Dawkins House as his office and awaited news from dispatches who reported General Sherman's movements around the clock. In one of the home's eight fireplaces, papers were burned that would have hung many a Southerner if they had fallen into Union or Federal hands. As Judge Dawkins wife's memoirs still exist, there is a great deal of written documentation highlighting the family and home beginning from the 1850s, during the tumultuous years of the civil war and through the reconstruction period.
